HOW TO MEET THIS ANIMAL: Fill out the application and we will follow up with you! We will connect you to his foster!

LOCATION: Currently Lennox is in a foster's home in Northern Virginia. A meet n greet can be arranged either at the foster's house or at the Homeward Trails adoption center in Fairfax Station VA

Breed: Chihuahua

Sex: Male

Location: Foster Home in Virginia

Adoption Fee: $475.00 included microchip and neuter surgery

ESTIMATE WEIGHT Currently full grown, weight is 12 lbs

ESTIMATED AGE: 3-4 years

KNOWN WITH DOGS: Lennox is okay with other dogs his size in the house but is not interested in playing; he is reactive to other dogs on leash encounters; needs training to improve his meet-new-dogs skills

KNOWN WITH CATS: He has not met any cats so we do not know how he does with them

KNOWN WITH KIDS: He was given to the shelter after a child in the family was known to pick on him - smacking and pulling - so we do not suggest Lennox for young children as he will likely react out of fear, given his past experience. May be a good fit for families with kids 10 years or older. So far he has shown friendly, outgoing behavior to adults he meets and we have avoided putting him in situations where a young child might stress him out.

KNOWN COMMANDS: Loves to learn new things. Knows "sit," "no," "go outside," and "go for a ride?"

KNOWN HOUSEBREAKING AND/OR CRATING: He knows to go potty outside but tends to mark spots in a new house; will stop with verbal correction. He likes to sleep in his crate at night, but doesn't like to be left in the crate with no one home or he will bark and cry loudly.

KNOWN LIKES: He likes to be petted and will give kisses in return. Lenny likes a 1/2 mile or longer walk that includes lots of sniff time or a big yard to run in, or both. He loves to sit in your lap and curl up next to you. He also loves food puzzles, lick mats and kongs to keep his mind challenged. Plus, he is very food motivated and this works well for training him. He loves string cheese pieces!

KNOWN DISLIKES: Young children pulling on him - so he will be best with adults or kids over 10 years of age. Other dogs on leashes coming toward him. Being left alone or locked in a crate for long periods of time.

ABOUT THIS ANIMAL:

Lennox also known as "Lenny" is a loving, curious, adorable male chihuahua. That isn't to say he doesn't have those known chihuahua tendencies - independent, barky and some separation anxiety, but he is still young enough to learn good behaviors from someone who will invest in training and display consistency and patience with him. He has been cared for by two fosters who have invested a few months on his social acclimation and skill development and he has responded really well to their instruction. He has learned, "No," "Sit," "Go outside," and "Go for a ride?" He is very willing to learn new tricks and words. He happily follows his person around the house and likes to curl up under the desk or beside you while watching TV. He has gained a lot of confidence when in new situations and responds lovingly to both men and women. He has a sweet personality around his people and will gaze at you adoringly.

He likes to go for car rides and on quiet walks, but would prefer to not encounter another dog. Recommend the adopter take reactive dog training right away to learn how best to help Lenny overcome his huge fear of encountering dogs on a leash. He is fine with other dogs in the house. Both his fosters have other small dogs in the house who had little interaction with Lenny. But Lenny is more of a solitary guy and doesn't seem to want to play with other dogs.

Highly recommend him for a single woman or man or a couple with no children under 10 years old. He would be most happy in a quiet home, preferably a house in the suburbs or country with an enclosed fenced yard so he can run zoomies, chase birds and sniff the grass to his heart's content.
