LOCATION: An amazing Foster home in Northern VA

ADOPTION COORDINATOR: Alana, Alana2373@yahoo.com

ESTIMATE WEIGHT FULL GROWN: 50 lbs

ABOUT THIS ANIMAL: Chewy is high energy and loves her walks. In the morning and evening, she enjoys an initial short walk with her foster sister followed by a longer (and much faster) walk solo. She loves all the intriguing scents she picks up while walking and enjoys meeting most other dogs. She would be happiest in a home with a fenced yard and another dog for a playmate. She has a strong prey drive for squirrels, rabbits, foxes, etc. and while her foster is working with her on 'leave it', her pursuit instinct is still quite strong. She spends much of the day outside in a fenced yard and has not attempted to jump out (the lowest part of the fence is 3 feet). She is frightened by suburban sounds such as garbage trucks, school buses, loud cars and certain bicycles. She has calmed down significantly in foster care, and we hope she will eventually adjust to all but the most frightening sounds.

Chewy is highly intelligent and food motivated so additional training should be relatively easy. She's very affectionate and doesn't engage in resource guarding of any kind. She likes to be near her people but seems okay when left alone for a few hours at a time. She rides quietly in the car.

ADOPTION FEE: $475. This fee INCLUDES spay/neuter and microchip. **Ask me about our many adoption benefits that include free exams, pet insurance, training and other discounts!

KNOWN WITH DOGS: Chewy enjoys meeting other dogs and is usually friendly with them although she has shown some reactivity to some dogs. She's happy to engage in on-leash play if she has a willing partner. She is attuned to her elderly foster sister and realizes she needs to adjust her play style with her.

KNOWN WITH CATS: Chewy has met one cat since being in her foster home. The cat stood her ground and quickly taught Chewy to maintain a respectful distance. Chewy has a strong prey drive, however, and she would almost certainly chase any cat that ran from her.

KNOWN WITH KIDS: Chewy has met a number of children on her walks and is happy to let them pet her. She would do fine in a home with children although her energy level might be too much for very young ones.

KNOWN COMMANDS: Chewy knows sit, 'stay', 'come', 'leave it', and 'off'.

KNOWN HOUSEBREAKING AND/OR CRATING: Chewy will stay very quietly in her crate and retreats to it during scary situations such as thunderstorms. As long as she is walked before bedtime, she will make it through the night without an accident. She sleeps under her foster parents' bed so she clearly likes having a 'den' of her own.

KNOWN LIKES: Chewy has a lot of energy and loves to run (zoomies are one of her specialties), fetch tennis balls and chew on sticks. She loves going on walks and meeting other dogs. She's very intelligent and appears to enjoy learning new commands, especially when she's rewarded with kibble treats. Peanut butter and bananas are other favorites.

KNOWN DISLIKES: Loud noises and/or large vehicles like motorcycles, buses, construction equipment, garbage trucks, thunder, marching bands and fireworks are still quite frightening for her.
