Sponsor These Shelter Animals

In Time to Bring Them to Safety

The animals featured here are some of the hundreds Homeward Trails is asked to rescue each week. We have limited time to get them  safely to rescue. Space and money are the greatest barriers to us saying yes to each request. It costs approximately $150 to rescue each dog and $100 to rescue each cat. This includes basic vet care, fuel for transport, and housing once they arrive at HT.

Please note that we make every effort to rescue all animals that are fully sponsored. Rare exceptions occur if the shelter secures a home locally with short notice or an unexpected serious medical or behavioral issue arises preventing the transport of the animal. In these cases, your sponsorship funds will be applied immediately to another animal in need if the animal you sponsored is no longer available for transfer to Homeward Trails.

Your sponsorship of an animal will save a life in real time. Every donation helps save a life.

Please, consider a tax-deductible donation today to help these animals. They deserve a 2nd chance at life. And together, we can give them that.

Shadow and her puppies are counting on us!

This little family needs a safe space.

Shadow is a 2-year-old mixed breed dog who ended up unexpectedly pregnant. She was surrendered to a southern Virginia shelter and now has 6 3-week-old puppies. A shelter is not a safe place for this little family, which needs a quiet, germ-free spot. We want to get them out as soon as possible, let the pups get a little older and then find them loving homes. Can you chip in so we can give this family the love and space they need?

Leah showed up at a house alone and hungry

This dog deserves a fresh start.
We don’t know how Leah ended up homeless. This 4-year-old boxer mix showed up outside a house in rural Virginia, alone and emaciated. Luckily, that person got Leah help. But being stuck in the shelter isn’t a good long-term plan. We want to get Leah here and find her a forever family. Can you help us cover the vetting and transportation costs?

Sandy was living on the streets

We don’t know much about Sandy’s story.

Sandy is a 1-year-old Golden Retriever mix who was found homeless in rural Virginia. We don’t know exactly how she ended up on her own, but we can do something about it. Sandy will thrive in a stable, loving home, and we know we can find her one. But we do need to cover the vetting and transporting costs — and that’s where we hope you come in. Can you help us turn things around for Sandy?

It’s hard to imagine the treatment Charlie has endured by his owner. This adorable, 3-year-old mini goldendoodle was left behind by his previous owner in rural Virginia. And it was no accident. When the owner was contacted, he said he didn’t want Charlie back. Poor Charlie has been confused and sad to be stuck in a shelter. We want to find Charlie a loving and loyal family, but we need help covering the costs of transporting and vetting him. Can you help us turn Charlie’s life around?

Poppins and Murphy need to start over

We don’t know how this duo ended up homeless.

Poppins and Murphy are 2-year-old doodles who were found as strays in southern Virginia. We don’t know how these dogs ended up on the street, but what we can control is their future. These beautiful dogs would be easily adopted here in northern Virginia, but we need your help to get them here. Can you chip in so we can offer Poppins and Murphy a brighter, happier future?

Sophia is confused to be stuck in a shelter

Let’s find this cutie a home.
Sophia is a 4-year-old poodle mix who was living in southern Virginia with her owner. But she was chasing the feral cats on the property, and the owner decided it was too dangerous and surrendered her. Poor Sophia is not used to life in a shelter and needs to get out of that noisy environment. We know she’d be quickly adopted here, but we need your help to cover the costs of vetting and transporting her.

Can you help us ensure Minnie gets the life she deserves?

But we need your help to make this a reality. Can you chip in?

Butters is a 1-year-old Pomski Chiweenie who was living in southern Virginia with his owner. But his owner said he was spending most of his time in the crate alone so he decided to surrender Butters to the shelter. This poor guy deserves a better life with a loving family, and we know we can find him the perfect fit. But we need your help to get him here. Can you chip in to cover the costs of vetting and transportation?

These dogs might have been given away

Let’s give these puppies the lives they deserve.

This litter of puppies was unexpected, and the owner was not able to take care of them. They most likely would have given them away, but instead they ended up at a partner shelter in southern Virginia. We want to get these sweet pups out of the noisy, hectic shelter and into a home where they can relax. Then, we can find them the loving forever homes they deserve. Can you help us turn things around for the H litter of cattle dog puppies?

Handsome Colby Needs A Family

Stray Colby needs help from Homeward Trails in order to find a home

Colby is a black and brown, nub-tailed Beagle mix that was found wandering as a stray in southern Virginia. This perky-eared boy is a year old and seems to be 15 pounds of love and curiosity. A shelter that is most likely low resource, low foot traffic, and higher risk is no place for him. Can you help bring Colby to Homeward Trails so that he has his best shot at finding the loving forever family he deserves?

Dumped and left behind

Henry needs a lifeline to save his life!

Henry is an adorable 8 month old Beagle mix who has had a very sad life so far. This precious boy was dumped in rural VA, and left behind as his owners drove away. Fighting for his life, Henry did everything he could to survive. Sadly though, life for a stray dog is very difficult and poor Henry was wasting away as food and water were scarce. Thankfully, Henry was found before he succumbed to starvation and brought to a rural shelter. While Henry now gets regular meals, he deserves so much more than a cold cement run to live his life in. Homeward Trails knows that Henry has a wonderful life ahead of him, but not without saving him from the shelter. With your donations, this once starving puppy can transform into a healthy and beautiful family pup. Please don’t let Henry get left behind again and sponsor his rescue today.

Walter wants to get out of the shelter asap

Little Walter needs our help!

Handsome Walter is a 3 year old Jack Russel/Chihuahua mix who was sadly surrendered to a rural VA shelter. This sweet boy had an owner whom he loved, but was given away to two separate families until the most recent family was unable to care for him. Now Walter, due to no fault of his own, is without a home once again. Walter has such a long life ahead of him. It would break Homeward Trails’ heart if he had to live out his life behind bars at a shelter.  Your donations can help Walter never get left behind again. Once Walter’s rescue is sponsored, he can be on the next ride up to a DC area foster. Walter’s whole life is just waiting to blossom. Please help change this deserving pup’s life and save him before it is too late!

They youngest puppies need a lot of help

The whole litter is desperate to be saved.

The cutest 6 week old mix puppies were surrendered to a rural VA shelter. All five pups have gone from living with the comforts of their mama to being put in a small metal cage with only a plastic bowl for a bed. Sadly, these puppies were likely the result of their owner not spaying their mama before she ended up pregnant. Now, the five puppies are lonely and homeless. The puppies don’t deserve for their first few weeks to be spent behind bars. To make matter worse, the shelter is a very scary place for young babies. Their immune systems are still underdeveloped and they are at an increased risk of developing a number of diseases. Taking on five puppies is a huge undertaking, but Homeward Trails is commited to not leaving even one puppy behind. With your help, the whole litter can be on the next ride up to the DC area. Their safety lies in our hands. Please don’t let these cuties become another homeless dog statistic and donate to their rescue!

Kenny can’t wait to get out of the shelter

Handsome Kenny is waiting patiently for you to help save him.

Handsome Kenny is lucky to be alive! This sweet 2 year old lab mix was found wandering as a stray in rural VA. Life for a stray dog is dangerous and scary. Predators, speeding cars, and no food and water are all obstacles that strays have to face daily. Thankfully, Kenny was brough to a rural shelter, where at least he is given meals and has a roof over his head. While Kenny is glad to have been found, he isn’t thriving at the shelter. A sweet dog like Kenny deserves to be pampered and loved in a home. Homeward Trails knows this happy face will brighten up any future family, but first he has to be rescued from the shelter. Your donations can help Kenny ensure that he is on the next ride to Homeward Trails. Please don’t let Kenny down and help save him before it is too late!

Rango is Ready to Be Rescued

Sweet puppy’s time is ticking away.

Rango is an adorable 6 month old Labrador mix who has found himself alone in a rural VA shelter. Just a puppy, Rango was surrendered by his owner, leaving him in a cold, unfamiliar place where every loud noise echoes the loneliness he feels. The shelter does its best to take care of Rango, but it is definitely no place for a puppy to grow up. Homeward Trails desperately need your help to rescue Rango and offer him the warmth and love he deserves. Every donation will go directly towards saving Rango from the scary shelter and giving him a chance at a happy life. Please help us bring Rango home to Homeward Trails so he can start over. He has his whole life ahead of him to grow into the happy and healthy dog he was always meant to be.

Sunshine has suffered a lot of hardships

Sweet puppy doesn’t deserve to be in a shelter.

Sweet Sunshine is an adorable 10 month old Aussie mix. She is so loving and fun, but sadly has been surrendered by her owner to a rural VA shelter. Sunshine hasn’t had an easy life. When she was a mere 4 months old, she suffered a very severe break in her leg and it had to be amputated. This precious tripod is able to get around wonderfully, but unfortunately her owner lost her home so Sunshine was given up and now spends her time sitting in a cage. Homeward Trails doesn’t want Sunshine to face any more difficulties in life and would love to transport her to a DC area foster. With your sponsorship, Sunshine doesn’t have to spend one more day of her sweet puppy days behind bars. Please donate to help Sunshine shine bright again.

Help save wavey from a lonely life in puerto rico

Please help Wavey start her life over.

Wavey, a sweet 3-year-old Pomeranian mix, is desperately in need of your help. Abandoned by her owner to a Puerto Rican shelter, Wavey was part of a heartbreaking cycle of neglect; her previous family allowed their dogs to breed uncontrollably, and only when the situation became unbearable did a neighbor’s complaint force them to surrender their pets. Now Wavey faces her own uncertain fate. Homeward Trails Rescue is determined to bring her to safety in the DC area, but we need your support to cover her rescue and flight costs. Please help us give Wavey the loving home she deserves by donating to her rescue. Every sponsorship brings her one step closer to a new life filled with care and compassion.

Roxie surrendered without warning

This sweet girl wants a family again!

Roxie is an adorable 1.5 year old Doodle who really wants to find a home again. This adorable girl was living with her family in Southern VA trying her best. Her previous family kept her outside in a kennel, and found that their neighbor’s dog kept coming over to bother Roxie. They found this too much of a challenge, and decided to surrender her. Roxie didn’t understand what had happened or what she did wrong, but suddenly found herself without her family and without the home that she had always known. We want to bring Roxie to Homeward Trails where she can recover from the stress of being surrendered and of the change that she has been through. Roxie deserves to have a safe and happy place to recover while we find her the forever family she deserves! We want to make sure that this never happens to her again.

Mom and newborn puppies found as strays

New mom and her puppies need our help!

Maples is the sweetest new mom who needs our help. This adorable girl and her eight puppies were found as strays in rural VA, alone and without shelter. This sweet mom tried to provide what she could for her babies, but every day was a struggle. The puppies were only days old when they were found, meaning that Maples had to have and take care of newborn puppies all by herself in the wilderness. She wanted nothing more than to protect and keep them safe, and she succeeded! It is amazing that these puppies and Maples survived, all a testament to how amazing of a mother Maples is. We want to make sure that this new mom and her puppies get the care that they need and do not end up in a shelter, which would be dangerous for the puppies’ health. Newborn puppies have weaker immune systems and it would be hard for them to stay healthy in the crowded shelters. Please help us get Maples and her puppies to Homeward Trails where we can ensure they will stay happy and healthy while we find them all forever families!

Newborn Pups in Rough Condition at High Risk

We don’t know much about Sandy’s story.

Sandy is a 1-year-old Golden Retriever mix who was found homeless in rural Virginia. We don’t know exactly how she ended up on her own, but we can do something about it. Sandy will thrive in a stable, loving home, and we know we can find her one. But we do need to cover the vetting and transporting costs — and that’s where we hope you come in. Can you help us turn things around for Sandy?

Happy Hallie Needs Our Help

Surrendered for unknown reasons, 2-year-old Hallie is at risk in a southern VA shelter

Hallie is a 2-year-old, light tan feist mix that was surrendered by her owner due to reasons unknown to us. She is small, smiley, and has the cutest ears! Unfortunately, Hallie was surrendered to one of our partner shelters in southern Virginia, which often are low-resource, low-foot traffic, and have higher euthanasia rates, which puts her at greater risk than necessary. Can you help bring Hallie to Homeward Trails so she has her best chance at finding the loving forever family she deserves?

Lets find this pair a happy home!

Paprika and Cinnamon are two adorable Chi mixes who have been through so much together. These two are a closely bonded pair, and we can tell how much they mean to each other through thick and thin. Paprika and Cinnamon are around 2 years old, and have been left homeless for a while. Their access to the love and care that they need has been slim, and after everything they have been through, we want to make sure that they recover, most importantly together. We want to find them a new home where they won’t be separated, and where they can live happily ever after by each other’s sides! These two deserve the best, and we want to make sure that they find a forever home where they will never be abandoned again. Please help us help Paprika and Cinnamon!

Smiley Twink Needs a Fresh Start

Surrendered due to allergies, 11-mo-old Tink deserves a loving family

Twink is an absolutely adorable, yellow golden retriever mix that has found herself in one of our partner shelters in southern Virginia due to no fault of her own. This smiley, happy, 11-month-old gal was training to be a service dog, but the owner was unable to keep her due to allergies. Now, after being with a loving owner in the only home she’s ever known, Tink is now stuck in a crowded, loud, scary shelter – one that most likely has low resources, low foot traffic, and higher euthanasia rates, which puts her at higher risk. Can you help bring Tink to Homeward Trails so she has her best shot at finding the loving forever home she deserves?

Sweet, Disabled Loki Has Run Out of Time

Disabled and stuck in an overly full rural shelter, Loki is out of time unless we rescue him

Loki is a deaf and partially blind black and white Great Dane mix that was likely the result of disreputable breeders. While he currently resides in rural Virginia, he is not a fan of the goats on the property he is living on, so they couldn’t keep him, and he is now stuck in a crowded, low-resource, low-foot traffic, VERY full rural Virginia shelter. He is currently out of time there, meaning that if we are unable to pull him, he will be put down. Can you help us save Loki from being euthanized due to no fault of his own and give him his best chance at finding the loving forever family he deserves?

Baby Nicholas Needs Help

11-week-old Nicholas at great risk if he ends up at a southern VA shelter

Nicholas is an absolutely precious, tan and white, Beagle/Basset mix puppy that has found himself risking being surrendered to a  southern Virginia shelter due to no fault of his own. An accidental birth, his current family can no longer keep him, but needs our help so that he can, at barely 11 weeks old, avoid the shelter. This would put Nicholas at great risk, as he is not old enough yet for all of the shots he would need to remain safe and healthy in what is most likely a loud, crowded, low-resource, low-foot traffic shelter, and puts him at greater risk for sickness or even death. Can you help sponsor bringing Nicholas to Homeward Trails so he can be safely placed until he is old enough to receive the vet care he needs and find the forever home he deserves?

Pedro was found on the highway

He’s out of harm’s way and ready for a family.

Pedro is a 4-year-old beagle mix who was found along a highway in southern Virginia. Luckily, a Good Samaritan found him and brought him to a nearby shelter. Pedro is lucky to be alive, and he’s now ready to extend his luck and find a forever family. We’re certain we can find Pedro a loving home, but we need your help to cover the costs of getting him here. Can you chip in so we can turn things around for Pedro?

Red wants out of the shelter

This pup was surrendered by his owner.
Red is an adorable, 2.5-year-old mixed breed dog who has ended up in a shelter in rural Virginia after his owner surrendered him. We don’t know much about his story, but we do know that the first step is getting him out of the shelter. Then, we’re confident we can find him a forever family. Can you chip in so we can rescue Red and turn his life around?

This trio has been living in a muddy pen

Their owner is too sick to care for them.

These 3-month-old puppies need much more care than their owner could offer. Their owner is a kind person, but was diagnosed with cancer and can’t take care of them. So they’ve been stuck living in a muddy pen. Luckily, the owner has agreed to give them up so they can have better homes, and we want to ensure they get those. Can you help us cover the vetting and transportation costs so we can get this trio the love and care they deserve?

Paco is Patiently Waiting For Someone to Save Him

Handsome boy is waiting for someone to rescue him.

Paco is a handsome 3 year old chocolate lab who was found roaming a in a rural VA neighborhood.  This sweet boy was clearly looking for a home but no one was stepping up to claim him as their own. Sadly, because no one wanted poor Paco, he found himself alone in a shelter. Paco is such a sweet boy and doesn’t deserve to be living life behind bars. Unfortunately, no one has shown interest in adopting Paco so he just waits patiently, hoping a rescue will come forward to save him from an unknown fate. Homeward Trails saw this good boy and knew that he needed a helping hand. The only thing standing in the way of Paco’s new life is enough funds being raised to cover his rescue fee to get him out of the shelter. Please sponsor Paco today so he can be on the first trip up to the DC area.

Sasha Deserves More than a life on the streets

Sasha’s owner knew she deserved more.

Sasha is a beautiful 11 month old lab mix who had an owner that loved her. In fact, he loved her so much that he did what was best for her which was to surrender her to a rural VA shelter. Sasha had lived her life with a homeless man, where she was so loyal and would stick right by him when he rode his moped through town and even on dangerous highways. Her owner knew deep down that this was not the life Sasha deserved. Her owner was not able to afford for her and after watching her sit outside in the pouring rain, made the difficult decision to turn her over in hopes she could find a safe and loving home. Sasha is lucky to have had such a caring owner, but sadly she now sits alone in a cage waiting for someone to step forward to adopt her. Every day she is alone is another day she becomes more depressed. Homeward Trails heard about Sasha’s heartbreaking story and want nothing more than to bring her to the DC area where she can blossom with a new family. Please donate to sweet Sasha’s rescue so she never has to experience homelessness again.

Wiggles wants out of the shelter

This pup’s face is begging for a forever family.

Who can say no to Wiggles? This 7-month-old Chi mix was found as a stray in southern Virginia. He’s much safer now in a shelter, but his soulful eyes are asking for a loving home, where he can thrive. We are on board to help Wiggles find his people, but we need your help to get him here! Can you chip in to cover the costs of vetting and transportation?

Bernie was found on the streets

This sweet pup needs a fresh start.

Bernie is a 4-year-old beagle mix. We don’t know much about his past, except that he was found as a stray and brought to a shelter in southern Virginia. We want to write a better future for Bernie and find him a forever home. Can you help us? The costs of saving dogs and cats add up, and we could use some support in rescuing Bernie.

Four Beagles Left for Dead

These sweet beagles are in desperate need of a rescue to save them.

These four precious Beagles were found abandoned on the side of a rural VA road, neglected and starving. Tragically, one dog had already passed away and the other four were sitting next to him, desperate for someone to find them. Thankfully, the surviving four were found and brought to a rural shelter where staff thought someone may come to claim them. Unfortunately, no one has come forward to collect these pups. Homeward Trails is thankful these Beagles did not meet the same fate as their fellow friend, but that does not mean they are out of the woods yet. The shelter is safe, but as it fills up, the Beagles’ lives may be cut short to make room for other dogs coming in. We can’t let them live the rest of their lives behind a cage door. Your donations can ensure that all four dogs get the veterinary care they need as well as transportation to the DC area to start their lives over again. At only 2 – 4 years old, they truly have their whole life ahead of them. Your sponsorship can help turn their tale of abandonment into one of hope and healing. Please donate today!

The Last Puppy is Waiting for His Turn to be Saved

Poor Lotso is the only puppy left out of his litter to be rescued.

Precious Lotso has been overlooked for too long! This cute 5 month old Black Mouth Cur mix came into a rural VA shelter with his littermates. After some time, all of his siblings have been adopted, except for poor Lotso! He is as precious as puppies come, so it is quite the surprise that no one has come forward to adopt this sweetheart. Sadly, Lotso went from the comforts of his siblings, to now being completely alone in a cage at a scary shelter. He is so very lonely and though waiting patiently to be saved, Lotso’s future is unknown if he stays at the shelter. Homeward Trails doesn’t want to let Lotso sleep one more night alone. He can be on the next ride up to a safe DC area foster, but first his rescue fees have to be fully funded. Without securing his rescue, Lotso could continue to be left behind. We cannot let this sweetheart spend another moment scared and alone! Please donate to Lotso today, so he can give lots of love to a future family!

Goldie was brought to the shelter

She was found homeless.

Goldie is an adorable, 2-year-old beagle mix who was found as a stray in southwest Virginia. She’s off the streets and safe in the shelter now, but the shelter is no place for an extended stay. We want to get this sweet pup into a home, where she can thrive. Can you help us make Goldie’s dreams come true?

Crystal was living on the streets

This pup is ready for a new life.

Crystal is a 1-year-old lab hound who was found as a stray in rural Virginia. She’s now safe in a shelter, but her odds of getting adopted aren’t great. The shelter is overcrowded and gets more surrenders than adoptions. We know Crystal would be snapped up if we can get her here, but we need your help to cover the cost of vetting and transportation. Can you give Crystal the life she deserves?

Riley and Rose are ready for families

The most perfect boy needs our help!

Riley and Rose are only 12 weeks old and already stuck in a shelter. These puppies are ready to thrive in loving homes, and we know we can find the perfect fits. But it’s been an expensive year already, and the bills keep piling up. Can you help us cover the vetting and transportation costs for this duo? Together, we can give them a better life.

His Owner Was Too Sick to Care for Him

At only 4 months old, Rumple deserves more than a life in a cage!

Adorable Rumple is a 4 month old poodle mix whose whole life has been turned upside down! At such a young age, Rumple is quite confused as to how he found himself alone in a rural VA shelter. Sadly, Rumple’s life made a drastic turn when he was surrendered by his ill owner. While Rumple deserves a loving and loyal family, his owner was not able to care for him after getting out of the ICU. Sadly, Rumple went from playing and the comforts of a home to a small metal cage with scary sounds and strangers caring for him. Rumple needs a reset on his life! He is far too young to be alone for days on end, receiving only the minimum in care. Homeward Trails knows this adorable pup would bring so much joy to a family, but first he has to be rescued from the rural shelter he is at. With your donations, little Rumple can be on the next ride up to Homeward Trails! Sponsoring a sweetheart like this will turn Rumple’s whole future around. Please donate to this baby today so he can grow up living the life he deserves!

  • Helping Happy Hounds – Fee Waived Hound Adoptions

As you may or may not know, Virginia animal shelters are filled with Hounds. These amazing dogs are most often discarded by callous hunters, found starving wandering the countryside. Many never make it as hunters and are then tied up to chains or left along the side of the road like old furniture. A good number of them do not make it out of shelters alive. But these dogs – like all dogs – are amazing and worthy of families. We just cannot get them families fast enough to stop them from dying in our shelters when there is no more space. And so we are trying something new here. ALL HOUND DOGS ADOPTED FROM HOMEWARD TRAILS WILL BE FREE. Yes, we are WAIVING ADOPTION FEES for Hounds for the foreseeable future. We hope that will entice well-matched applicants to consider a Hound now. Use the money you save on training, treats, toys.We think all dogs are worthy. But the reality is that some take extra incentives. Some have more barriers to getting adopted. And the result is well, more end up dying. And no – this does NOT mean we are just giving dogs away. All applicants will still go through our application/screening process to ensure good homes. This is just us trying to save more dogs by eliminating one more barrier to adoption. And hey, Hound lovers can use all the extra money they can get to buy treats, right?Help us help these Hounds. Our program Helping Happy Hounds is live NOW. Let’s save some lives!
