What a difference a few weeks -- and lots of love -- can make! Amazingly, Jacob was sweet even before anyone showed him love. Now we're happy to share that the sweet boy is basking in the attention of his foster--and napping long and hard in the doggie bed donated for his use. His foster mom says that whenever she crouches down to try to take his picture, he climbs into her lap and lies on his back for a tummy rub. Storm is 12 years old, but has a lot of personality and life left in him! And holy smokes, he is gorgeous! Giant blue eyes, soft-as-feathers fur- and totally litterbox trained! Who would give this cutie up?!  He is such a goofball- he always makes me laugh.

Jacob was found in a man's barn, eating grain and taking shelter from the bitter winter cold. The man called the Wetzel County, WV shelter and the shelter, knew just who to call to get Jacob the care and love he needed: Homeward Trails. Skinny has been with me (his foster mom) and Bella (my hound) for a little over a week now, and boy is he coming along. I wrote on his first blog entry that he's very afraid of men. But he's been giving men more of a chance--looking to me for assurance and comfort. It's a great sign--he bonds very quickly and he's open to having his mind changed! I (Freddie's foster mom) am thinking that he's got some Basenji in him. I was thinking it myself and then someone asked me if he was a Basenji on a walk the other day. Between his white markings and the curl of his tail, I definitely see it. What do you think? He's continuing to do well with his house training. Skinny James is a sweet beagle/dachshund mix who came to HT from a hoarding situation. Skinny is housetrained, crate trained and loves nothing more than snuggling. He is very afraid of men, but we're working on it in his foster home. He's very smart, bonds quickly and is eager to please, so we're excited to see how he progresses now that he feels safe.  He loves to play with other dogs--he's in a foster home with another dog and they play and enjoy each other--but he is currently not friendly to the dogs he sees when he's on-leash. Mandy was one of the earlier cats who came into the Homeward Trails system. She has been with us since September of 2007. Given up by her owners when they acquired a dog who was attacking her, this gentle older kitty with only one good eye has gotten more than her fair share of bad breaks. After an incredibly long time in foster care, Mandy was finally adopted only to be returned when her adopter took a job involving too much travel. Freddie seems to be a Bull Terrier mix (like Spuds Mackenzie) with his big head and super friendly temperament. He's the perfect size for the city - that's why we got him out of the country! Freddie found himself at the Ritchie County Shelter in West Virginia right after the main building burned down. With his short soft fur and compact size, he really belongs in the city! This poor kitty was found in October dragging himself into the backyard of a woman living in rural VA. Once at the shlelter, he was x-rayed and found to have a broken jaw, a broken leg and buckshot in his side. He also had a mouth full of broken teeth and was so skinny it was not clear how he was still alive. The shelter begged us to take him and we did! Our vet confirmed his dire status, including an infection that had set in. We have since beat the infection and with a donation of $300 had tests…
